Overview

Essentially a 14thC church with many interesting features and additions. Of particular note is the Jesse window, which was renewed by Wailes but is still the most important 14thC glass in the county. Fine 14thC stained glass is can also be seen in the upper lights of the South Aisle East Window. The mediaeval doors and iron hinges are very emotive of the period while the two-storey vestry and tower room give a sense the local preparations for defence in troubled times.

Emily Wilding Davison, the suffragette who died under the hooves of the King’s horse in 1913 is buried in the mature and tranquil churchyard and in one quiet corner you can find Polish war-graves. The Watch-house at the South entrance was used in the nineteenth century to guard the churchyard from grave-robbers using the Great North Road.
